Wintertime Castle Tours - January 2023

Wintertime Castle Tours

January 2023

Experience a special Guided Tour of Highclere Castle, known to millions as

the set of the much-loved TV series and 'Downton Abbey' films.

Steeped in history, Highclere retains the warmth and welcome of a much loved family home.
During the spring public opening period there may be 900 visitors each day but, if you join us on one of these special guided tours (morning or afternoon) we look forward to welcoming circa 60 guests. It is therefore a very different and unique experience.

Guests are welcomed into the Saloon, the heart of the Castle which in the depths of winter is still lit through the leaded skylights high above. The guided tour takes you on a journey through the State Rooms and up the staircase around the Galley Bedrooms. Our guides have exceptional knowledge of the building, works of art and furniture with plenty of anecdotes.

Guests are then invited to descend to the cellars to explore the Egyptian exhibition at leisure. This fascinating Exhibition tells the story of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and contains antiquities from the earlier tombs in the Valley of the Nobles and Valley of the Queens. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter spent some 16 years working out in Egypt before they knocked through a sealed door to find a 3,500-year-old royal tomb.

We then hope you will enjoy a selection of refreshments in the Coach House Tearooms from homemade soups, quiches, delicious mini cakes and other dishes depending on the season and chef's choice.

Tickets are £130 per person.  This includes a guided tour of the Castle, entry to the Egyptian Exhibition and time to explore the Gardens.  Your ticket also includes complimentary refreshments and a signed coffee table book by Lady Carnarvon.

Morning Tours begin at 10:30am but you are welcome to arrive from 10:00am.

Afternoon Tours begin at 1:30pm but you are welcome to arrive from 12.30pm.

Your tour will commence promptly at the time stated on your tickets, please make your way to the front door of the Castle for this time.

Please note that the gates to the Castle and Grounds close promptly at 4pm as it gets dark early at this time of year.

If the weather is crisp and dry, please do enjoy a walk in the gardens and we hope that guests will enjoy the first signs of snowdrops in the gardens.

The dress code for the event is smart/casual. Please wear sensible footwear for the Gardens.
