Real Lives & Film Sets
Castle Guided Tours

Lord and Lady Carnarvon are delighted to invite you to step into the real-life location and living film set from Downton Abbey this autumn. Wind your way through the Park, along the gravel drive and join us to explore the very familiar State Rooms from the much-loved TV series and film "Downton Abbey".

During your Guided Tour, you will recognise where so many of your favourite scenes were shot, so many memorable lines uttered. Downton Abbey has given much enjoyment to many people and a Tour of the Real Downton Abbey must be the ultimate engagement.

Beginning in the Saloon, the heart of the Castle and a central room where characters from upstairs and downstairs met, the Tour will share the real history and works of art from the Stanhope bedroom, decorated in real life in 1895 for HRH the Prince of Wales and also the bedroom in which the handsome Turkish diplomat died of a heart attack. It was also Shirley MacLaine's bedroom for one episode and Lady Anstruther's in another.

Walk into the Dining Room and memories of the scenes of the royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary in the Downton Abbey Movie will come flooding back. In reality, their signatures are also in Highclere’s visitor book. After the Tour through the State Rooms, upstairs to the Gallery and around the Gallery Bedrooms, guests are then invited to descend to the cellars to explore the Egyptian Exhibition.

This fascinating Exhibition tells the story of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and contains antiquities from the earlier tombs in the Valley of the Nobles and Valley of the Queens. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter spent some 16 years working in Egypt, before they knocked through a sealed door to find a Royal tomb 3,500 years old.

Following this, you will enjoy a seasonal selection of afternoon tea style refreshments chosen by our Head Chef and served in our Castle Tea Rooms. This will include a selection of finger sandwiches, homemade soup, quiche and delicious mini cakes, as well as traditional scones and cakes.

A stroll in the Grounds is a must after indulging in the Tearooms. Please take the opportunity to explore the Gardens.

The number of guests for these Tours is strictly limited. Small groups of guests are given a Guided Tour of the State Rooms by our experienced Guides in order to provide an exclusive and unique experience.

Tickets are £125 per person to include the Guided Tour of the State Rooms and the Egyptian Exhibition and still leave time to explore the Gardens at your leisure. The Castle Gift Shop will also be open for those last minute souvenirs of your special day.

Your ticket also includes complimentary afternoon tea style refreshments prepared by Highclere's chefs and served by Highclere's butlering team and a signed copy of the Countess of Carnarvon’s book 'Christmas at Highclere, Traditions and Recipes from the Real Downton Abbey'.
