Living in a Castle

Castle Guided Tours,  Egyptian Exhibition & Spring Gardens

Tuesday 18th May 2021 - Friday 21st May 2021

Price: £85.00 per person to include a Welcome Talk, a guided Tour of the Castle State Rooms and Galleried Bedrooms, Exhibition  and the Gardens.

“Each year I consider a different theme around Highclere, its landscape, the stories and characters who have lived here. I thought it would be interesting and fun to share what life was and is like to live in a Castle, with the news of the latest Downton film being made, how we plan and prepare the setting – and  the  mix of fiction and reality.  Above all, we are so looking forward to welcoming our first guests inside the Castle this year”.

Lady Carnarvon

Guests are welcomed outside the front of the Castle for a short talk around the topic of ‘Living in a Castle’ such as what it is like to live with a film crew or being a custodian of a stately home. Following this, guests are welcomed into the Castle to embark on a guided tour both to explore the works of art but also the rooms which are of course also the set in which “Downton Abbey” was filmed both for TV and film.

The structure of the day allows you to enjoy the Gardens either at your leisure or in the company of a guide.

Spring is a special time of year at Highclere when you can enjoy the famous azalea beds in the gardens. A riot of colour and scent, they stretch across the lawns in front of the folly, "Jackdaws Castle". The Azaleas altaclarense (Highclere) developed circa 1820, are now to be found in many gardens on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Numbers remain limited and we ask you to pre-book. There is a choice of three arrival times:

● 10.00am. We welcome you into the Castle by 10.30am.

● 12.00noon. We welcome you into the Castle by 12.30pm.

● 2.00pm. We welcome you into the Castle by 2.30pm.

Each time has a structured programme for you.  Please do allow four to five hours to enjoy your day here at Highclere.

If you choose 2.00pm please feel free to arrive from 1pm to enjoy the Gardens and Gift Shop.

The Tearooms are open throughout the day for all guests offering a selection of food, including sandwiches, cakes, scones, teas and coffees to purchase as you wish. The Gift Shop is also open with a wonderful selection of homeware, plant pots, books and gifts!

The price reflects the exclusive Guided Tours and structured schedule of the day which at other times of year are set at a higher price.
